New Programs!

***************************************************************************

-  The UBATP is a new program that the we are setting up in order to help fellow students in BIO courses.  Anyone in the club is welcome to participate as either a tutor or student.  Courses we have tutors available for are: BIO200, BIO201, BIO302, and BIO319.

-Undergraduate Biology Association Research Shadowing Program

- The UBARSP is a program that allows students to shadow research faculty, much like how one would shadow a physician.  As you are aware, UB is a well known for its research achievements.  It is therefore important that we, as students, take advantage of this strength.  We do have Undergraduate Research opportunities, however this program will provide a stepping stone for students interested in research.  This is the premise:

1.       We provide a list of professors who study different facets of Biological Sciences(i.e. molecular, cell, biochemical, etc.)

2.       You tell us who you would like to shadow.

3.       We set up a time and place to go visit a lab for a few hours for a few days.

a.       You won’t do any experiments but you will watch the professor or his/her post-docs, Ph.D students, etc. do their experiments.  You’ll see the difference between doing benchwork in regular class labs vs. doing benchwork in a real lab.  Hopefully you’ll be able to go a few days in a row in order to see how experiments can take hours up to a few days in order to complete.

4.       That’s it! It’s not a semester long obligation and if you like it, you might consider working there for credit or money.

Teaching Experience with the Lorraine Academy Elementary School in Buffalo.

The UBA is participating in a joint program with Lorraine Elementary by helping teachers in science classrooms.  The school is trying to advertise medical careers and is looking for college students to help out and be positive role models for the young students.  Lorraine is grades 3-8 and you can help out really in any kind of setting you’d like (any grade level, gym class, science, etc) and for as many hours you can afford.  It is a great experience and if you are interested please e-mail the coordinator, Joan Bernobich, jbernobich@buffaloschools.org
